Hot Women on Broadway

“It was great fun, and I learned a lot about the other women there!” enthused Nicole Graham, of the “Hot Women on Broadway” held last Saturday afternoon. Our locally-based business women’s network, Hot Women, held their second “off peak time” event, featuring networking, fun and a little bubbly. A capacity group of nearly 30 women met in the selected venue, Broadway Shoes store in Peach Tree Arcade, Port Macquarie.

Body Language Cues

How your body language can affect your authority

There are two sets of body language cues that followers look for in leaders: warmth (empathy, likeability, caring) and authority (power, credibility, status). Although I know several leaders of both sexes who do not fit the stereotypes, I’ve also observed that gender differences in body language most often do align with these two groupings. Women are the champions in the warmth and empathy arena, but lose out with power and authority cues.

All leaders are judged by their body language. If a female wants to be perceived as powerful, credible, and confident, she has to be aware of the nonverbal signals she’s sending. There are a number of behaviors I’ve seen women unknowingly employ that reduce their authority by denoting vulnerability or submission. Here are 10 body language mistakes that women leaders commonly make.

Self Promotion

Something that people do well, or really, really badly.

Being good at Self Promotion is more than just pushing the goods or services you are peddling. It is also about you and your image, presentation, trustworthiness, and how often someone has heard your spiel.  If you sound like a broken record, then it is likely people have already turned off you, and they won't listen until you change your approach.

Professionals break Self Promotion into Authentic and Egocentric categories. Authenticity is the foundation of effective and sustainable self promotion; while egocentric means, “It is all about me and I don't care how I promote my product you will probably do business with me anyway”.  This may be true for specialist goods or products that no one else stocks, where people are forced to do business with you.  If you use this approach, listen to the song – the times are a changin'. Egocentric approach may have worked for a long time in regional areas, but people get jack of this behaviour and find alternatives like buying on-line.
